DJ Jim Q's Playlist: Kismet

The theme of the month is Kismet and it was selected by our Istanbul chapter. I didn’t know this but Kismet is of Turkish origin. From what I understand it comes from the word “qisma” which means portion or fragment, but somewhere along its journey it has been morphed into a common synonym for fate or providence.

I will admit I’m skeptical of notions like fate or predetermined destiny. I think much of our belief in such things is more often the result of the old logical fallacy “post hoc ergo propter hoc”: after this, therefore because of this. We instinctively impose meaning and divine purpose on even the most trivial and random of occurrences. There must be something about the way our brains are wired that is susceptible to this kind of fantastical thinking. Could it be that the same logic that powers our belief in destiny and karma also fuels our sports superstitions and conspiracy theories? I’m sympathetic, it is hard to resist the urge to connect dots that may not really relate. And to be honest, it’s a lot more compelling to imagine larger forces at work designing plans for our tiny little lives than to confront a reality where existence is determined not by purpose but by a chaotic mix of choices and chance. On the topic of divine intervention and larger forces at work, if I am certain of one thing, it’s that I can’t be certain. So far be it from me to discourage these romantic notions and whimsical tendencies. They have, after all, been the inspiration behind so many brilliant works of art. And as you might imagine, these fanciful ideas inspired the songs in this month’s playlist.

It is meant to be. This is no chance encounter — you, here, now, listening to this playlist is all part of the greater plan. These predetermined plots are the soundtrack for this month’s theme Kismet. So search for Reason with Big Thief, fulfill your Fate with H.E.R., and find yourself in the Right Place at the Wrong time with Dr. John. Enjoy these songs of providence, is it destiny? Maybe so.

Thank you for listening. If you enjoy these playlists please give me a shout on Twitter and follow me on Spotify. See you next month.
