About the speaker

Amy Nguyen's life work brings together mind, body and nature through her work in textiles and movement meditation practices.

After initially pursuing a degree in marine biology, Amy connected with the colors and patterns of nature and obtained her bachelor's degree in studio art. Textile workshops, at formative craft schools in the US and Japan over many years, include the beautiful arts of shibori, katazome and roketsuzome. The study and ongoing practice of these arts create a unique synergy to Nguyen's embodiment of sewing and dance from childhood. For the past several decades, Nguyen has also studied and integrated into her work, the mindbody internal arts of yoga, meditation, taiji, qigong and baguazhang. Movement practices that deepen reverence for nature and ancient wisdom are integral to Nguyen's modern study and work in textiles. Current studies in movement arts are with teachers from the US and China's Wudang mountain.

Nguyen exhibits her textile art nationally and internationally and has been acknowledged and received awards from the American Craft Council, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show and the Smithsonian Craft Show. She has been featured in numerous publications such as Ornament Magazine and Fiber Art Now, and has guest lectured at venues and institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts and the Smithsonian. Nguyen received certification in Peter Wayne's Eight Active Ingredients of Tai Chi and currently assists with classes in the Greater Boston area. She also enjoys leading workshop intensives throughout the country and shares textile and movement classes from Midway Studios in Boston, where she lives with her husband Ky and their dog Kuma.
