About the speaker

Arian Leka - Writer, Scholar, and University Professor

Born in Durrës, Arian Leka is recognised as a distinguished figure of the avant-garde generation that emerged after Albania’s borders opened. Celebrated as an esteemed author of numerous works - including poetry, prose, essays, dramaturgical texts, stage productions, and academic monographs - he uniquely integrates scholarly research with literary innovation. Arian Leka has held the positions of researcher and lecturer at the University of Arts in Tirana, serving as an Associate Professor (Assoc. Prof. Dr.) and conducting research at the Institute of Linguistics and Literature of the Academy of Sciences of Albania. He has also served as a mentor to writers and artists through creative writing and screenwriting. In this capacity, he has published a wide range of academic works and has influenced the development of literary studies in Albania, as well as in academic institutions and university departments across Europe, Hong Kong, and China, where he has delivered lectures. Through travel, training, and experience in scientific research, as well as knowledge of regional and European cultural policies, he has consistently broadened his perspectives, refined his approaches to issues such as borders, immigration, and civilizations, and expanded the range of media he employs across diverse national and international projects. His literary oeuvre is characterized by a synthesis of historical memory and personal experience, wherein maritime symbolism and writing techniques that integrate fact and fiction establish a distinctive narrative style. Through this methodology, he investigates themes of identity, history, and collective memory. Arian Leka’s works have been translated into numerous languages and included in prestigious international anthologies such as Best European Fiction 2011. He has received six national and four international awards for his work, among them the prestigious literary prize of the Albanian Ministry of Culture, the Tudor Arghezi – Opera Omnia 2022. Through his research, writing, and academic engagement, Arian Leka has continually expanded his creative and theoretical horizons, making a significant contribution to contemporary Albanian literature and to the international literary dialogue.

The concept of EMBER, in my perspective, constitutes transformation without complete extinction. In a world that claims the ability to awaken without passing, the ember accompanies the ashes. While the ashes settle, they do not forget the fire.

The ember, concealed beneath the surface, awaits its moment. One preserves the heat, the other preserves the testimony. The fading of the ember signifies a mode of existence in forms that demand no attention. Initiating from nothing is not our way: instead, we carry the past with us, understanding that through art, what once seemed extinguished can be rekindled.

Enthralled by this perpetual cycle, we generate meanings from the remnants of fire, ashes, and embers, transforming them into experiences, and that spark which subsequent generations will recognise as a new beginning.
