At its core, corruption draws its source from devious creativity. Similarly, countering corruption demands an outspoken creative voice. This is the creative shimmer that Gaby el Ashkar is keen to mirror in his body of work.
Gaby’s art was created as he witnessed and experienced corruption firsthand in Lebanon. He watched as it contaminated individuals, society, and systems. Over time, corruption altered and re-altered his path, proving itself a ruthless—and even fatal—adversary. Shaped by these experiences, Gaby’s work showcases corruption at its most severe. He hopes it can be a reminder that, as the world gets smaller by the day, no society is immune to the effects of corruption. And every society needs creatives to help fight it and hold people to account.
