Jonatan Guerrero-Ramirez tells us how he puts the “I” in PRIDE
Jonatan shares his story of growing up as a queer Mexican immigrant in the South, becoming a DACA recipient, what “Pride” means to him, and how his life and work is inspiring others to be authentically themselves.
About the speaker
Born in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato Mexico and growing up in the small town of Waynesboro, Georgia, Jonatan's biggest influence was always community building with a touch of southern latinx magic. As a proud DACA recipient he started engaging with other influencers to create a better community. This opened his eyes to the world of fashion and marketing. In 2014, he moved to Charleston to study fashion at the Art Institute of Charleston.
Jonatan’s collaborative work can be seen in Charleston Fashion Week, Southern Living Magazine, Nickelodeon, Target, and many others. He is an honoree of the 2020 Honor41 list and currently sits on The City of Charleston's Latinx Advisory Council. His passion for helping youth extends into the classroom where he teaches with YoArt Inc. as an adjunct teacher.
Today, he is the Closet Case Thrift Store and community events director at We Are Family a southern grassroots non-profit organization that provides affirming spaces for LGBTQI+ and ally youth up to the age of 24 through direct support, leadership development, and community engagement) by running their gender inclusive social enterprise Closet Case Thrift Store and organizing their community events.
When he is not working, he loves to watch Disney movies with his husband Jose and their fur babies, Yuki, Milo, and Chip.
