About the speaker
Kat Martin is a theatre director, educator, and immersive experience maker from Charlotte, NC. She is the cofounder and Artistic Director of Mixed Metaphors Productions an artist collective that disrupts narratives of erasure through immersive theatre, art installation, and new oral histories in Charlotte, NC. In this role, Kat has directed community-driven devised theatre pieces like FIXAPLATE, SWIMCAP, and most recently KUDZU: A STORY OF BELONGING. In 2021 Kat received her MFA in Social and Environmental Arts Practice from Prescott College after getting her MA in Theatre History Criticism Dramaturgy and Theory from the University of South Carolina in 2014. In 2014 Kat began her professional theatre career at Virginia Stage Company as the Associate Director, Resident Dramaturg, and Teaching Artist. While at VSC Kat was the Associate Director on projects like THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, CHRISTMAS CAROL, OLIVER TWIST, and GROUNDED. Kat also directed all educational touring productions and taught community and in-school residencies. During her tenure at VSC Kat also created original immersive work WITH YOUR NAME UPON MY LIPS and THE LINE: ART FOR SOCIAL CHANGE SERIES. After working in Virginia for 5 years Kat moved to Cleveland, Ohio to work at Cleveland Public Theatre where she directed new work like; FOUR VEILS, ADVENTURES OF THE PAGE TURNER, and THE FOUR FRUITS OF HOPE. In 2019 Kat moved back to her hometown, Charlotte, and worked within the theatre community, large-scale events, and at several universities in the area like Johnson C Smith, Winthrop, and currently Wingate University. Kat was the Associate Director and Dramaturg of THE WOLVES an Actor’s Theatre Charlotte. Kat worked on multiple pieces with Three Bone Theatre like OSLO and UGLY LIES THE BONE and was the dramaturg on FOR COLORED GIRLS with Brand New Sheriff Productions. Since coming home Kat has founded Mixed Metaphors Productions and served as the production manager for Charlotte events like the Thanksgiving Day Parade and Charlotte Shout.
