About the speaker
Kate Tepe is a Cincinnati based artist who creates work related to group and personal identities, interpersonal relationships and community building. Her work calls for viewers to take ownership in their experience and invites them to share responsibility in the creative process, which also behaves as a social critique. She wants to examine and reveal conscious and unconscious identities (racial, sexual, national or cultural) and question how these ideas we develop about ourselves affect our ability to engage with others, intimately and honestly.
She has a background in fashion design and conceptual based works. She received her MFA from the University of Cincinnati and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has also worked under the guidance of nationally and internationally recognized artists such as Katie Parker and Nick Cave. Who have influenced her work with their respect of history, materiality and pushing the definition of their respective media. With a strong interest in community engagement and artist lead instruction, she has developed programming for the Contemporary Arts Center, the Art Institute of Chicago and Cincinnati Public Schools.
