Josh Dunigan guides the crowd through the darkness with his interactive drum circles

Josh Dunigan has been an influence in the Grand Rapids creative world for many years. This morning, he gave us a demonstration of how making music together can relax and rejuvenate our nervous systems—which was a light we all need in this current darkness.

About the speaker

Based in Michigan, Josh partners with inclusive community organizations to create musical moments at schools, libraries, museums, music festivals and residential programs. Josh is President of the Board of Directors for the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild, an international organization of professional community musicians and interactive music facilitators. Through his work on the board, he guides a global conversation with members, industry partners, community organizations, and the general public to further connection, communication, and expression. Josh has been a teaching artist for Arts in Motion for over 10 years. Through the Drum and Dance class (co-taught with Molly!),the students help create a routine of musical movement that is fun and helps build the important brain/body connection. During the summers, you can find him out at Indian Trails Summer Camp making sure the campers are having another best day ever! Just down the hallway, at Joyful Sounds Music Studio, Josh teaches a Music Together program called Rhythm Kids that is great for 4 to 7yo Through Artists Creating Together, Josh directs The Action Drummers, an inclusive group of cognitively disabled musicians. The goal of this group is to perform at community events to promote the work of ACT and disabled people in the community. Josh has also been a music guide at Stepping Stones Montessori School in Grand Rapids for the past 8 years. He uses a curriculum with emphasis placed on understanding the fundamentals of rhythm, melody, composition, and having fun with world music in an ensemble. Over the past twenty years, Joshua Dunigan has used his love of world music to teach and perform Afro-Cuban and Latin percussion with adult classes and public school students. As the percussionist for Latin-Rock band Cabildo, Josh places traditional Cuban, Brazilian, and Andean rhythms in a contemporary setting for live shows in Grand Rapids
