About the speaker

Lia Kiessling is a lifelong advocate for connection, equity, and community power, and believes community radio is one of the most vital tools we have to make those values real and accessible.Over the past 20 years, Lia has worked across global nonprofits, public service, and public media, always focused on supporting people and amplifying local voices. From launching community radio stations to securing emergency broadband, Lia has seen how technology and media, when shaped by the people they serve, can build something bigger than any of us could do alone..Since stepping into the role of Station Director at CKCU-FM, it has been the honour of a lifetime for Lia to support the staff, volunteers, and listeners who keep the station thriving. Together, they are making sure that diverse voices and local perspectives stay loud, clear, and impossible to ignore.Lia also serves on the board of National Capital FreeNet, where they continue to champion access, inclusion, and community-rooted infrastructure.

About the theme:

Our theme for January is کورسو (KOORSOO). It was chosen by our Tehran chapter in Iran and illustrated by Hoda Ramy.

کورسو or Koorsoo (pronounced Koor·Soo) is a Farsi word meaning “a glimmer of hope.”

As a new year begins, ask yourself, “what is giving me hope right now?” Share your koorsoo with the people around you. Because the world needs all the hope it can get.
