About the speaker

Lizbeth Ortiz, an artist with roots in Mexico City, raised in Houston, and who matured in the bustling environment of New York City, has developed a unique artistic style characterized by the use of recycled materials, modeling pastes, and gels. Her work, known for its intricate texture and emotional depth, reflects a profound connection to her cultural heritage and traditions.

Ortiz's life and work were profoundly impacted by her experiences in New York City during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, prompting her to delve deeper into her cultural roots. This period of introspection led her to create her first public ‘Día de Muertos Altar’ for a New York City show in October 2001, marking a pivotal moment in her career. She regards the anatomically correct heart featured in her artwork as a universal symbol, drawing inspiration from her Catholic upbringing to bridge economic, social, and racial divides. Through her canvas and brush, Ortiz is committed to inspiring her community, imbuing her pieces with a sense of sacredness and transcendence.

Ortiz's contributions to the arts have been recognized through various accolades and initiatives, underscoring her impact on both the local and international art scenes. Notably, she co-organized the first Frida Festival in Houston in 2005, was named the official artist for the Latin Grammy in 2008, and received awards such as 2nd place in the Bohemia Beer - "The Kahlo Challenge" in 2011. Her commitment to fostering artistic expression extended to her co-founding of MuXer HTX, a collective aimed at providing a platform for women artists. Beyond her accolades, Ortiz's collaboration on projects like Modular Woman and her recognition by Solo Mujeres Magazine highlight her ongoing influence and dedication to the arts community in Houston, where she currently resides.
