When we fully embrace our culture, we are doorways to our past, present and future.

Mahoganee steps on stage as the EMBER herself; bringing her signature blend of music, writing, photography and mixed media art rooted in Gullah Geechee cultural memory. Born and raised in South Carolina, Mahoganee has spent over 35 years crafting what she calls “Indigenous Soul Music” alongside her husband, Mr. Bounce Back. In her talk, she honors her ancestral roots and their influence in shaping her creative life and work as an Interdisciplinary Cultural Worker and Gullah Geechee Sound Griot.

About the speaker

Mahoganee, also known as "Da Sea Island Songbird", is an Interdisciplinary Cultural Worker and Gullah Geechee Sound Griot, born and raised in South Carolina. Alongside her husband, Mr. Bounce Back, she has spent over 35 years crafting what they call "Indigenous Soul Music": a soulful, ancestral blend of Jazz, Funk, Blues, Hip-hop, and West African and Caribbean influence rooted in Gullah Geechee cultural memory. Together, they create "The Mahoganee Xperience" - an onstage expression where music, writing, photography, and mixed media converge as a liberatory practice. Through their nonprofit, Responsible ARTistry, Inc., Mahoganee serves as Executive Creative Director, using art to Entertain, Elevate, Enlighten and Explore – advancing Gullah Geechee culture, heritage, and land and water stewardship with local and international youth.

A Certified Teaching Artist through the SC Arts Commission, Grammy Recording Academy member, Leo Twiggs Leadership Scholar, and TEDx performer, Mahoganee has shared lineups and projects with Grammy winners and nominees including Dom Flemmons and Carolyn Malachi – most recently contributing as a Gullah/Geechee Sound Healer to the Grammy-nominated album The Auditorium Vol. 1 by Common and Pete Rock and its nominated video, "When the Sun Shines Again."
