What story does the land where you grew up tell?
Michael Walker wows us with the wide diversity of projects he’s working on and how each of them celebrates native species, native plants, and the history of the land where he grew up.
About the speaker
Michael Walker is a visual artist, writer, and musician.
He has played guitar, bass, and drums for the abstract rock group The Fotoelectric Effect, played guitar and sang background vocals for an indie rock group called Ghostbunny, and sat in on numerous other performing groups. Currently, he composes, records, and performs as a solo act under the name M. Walker and as a multi-instrumentalist in the band Dead Scientist.
Although he doesn’t traipse around Red River Street performing live as much as he used to, he is lucky to emcee the annual John Prine Tribute Show at The French Co. Grocer in Marathon, TX. He is also in Walker Lukens' flotilla of wildlings making merry in his annual Last Walt revue show at The Paramount Theater. When the winds are right, you can still catch him performing at a special venue somewhere across Texas now and then too.
Michael is a member of the Artists For Wild Nature program with Project Coyote, where he does advocacy work to encourage peaceful coexistence with predator species like wolves, bears, coyotes, etc. He also does work in the science communication space, helping scientific organizations leverage artists' narrative talents to communicate important ideas in science through art.
Michael grew up on the Texas high plains, where he believes so much great art comes from. He is an avid meditator, runner, reader, Spanish speaker, and a proud progressive Texan.
