About the speaker
Nick Barreiro is the Co-Founder and CEO of Clay Imports, a direct-to-consumer e-commerce company based in his hometown of Austin, TX, with a creative studio in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Clay Imports specializes in designing, producing, and directly selling handcrafted tiles, home goods, and clay architectural products.
An experienced tile installer himself, Nick established strong relationships with skilled tile artisans and manufacturers in Mexico. Alongside sourcing and developing fine & unconventional clay products, Nick often collaborates with artists from various mediums to bring fresh products to an international, design-oriented market.
Nick is actively involved in various organizations. He serves on the executive board of Mexic-Arte, the official Mexican American fine arts museum of Texas. His commitment to fostering connections between the U.S. and Mexico led him to chair the Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Committee, a community-led organization dedicated to promoting friendly relations and understanding between Austin's citizens and people around the world.
As often as possible, Nick likes to ride bikes. He founded the Mezcal Moto Rally, a three-day motorcycle rally race from Texas to mezcal-producing regions in Mexico. He is also the executive producer and creative force behind the El Alma Documentary Series, which explores the utilization of natural resources in Mexico. One notable episode, El Color de Lumbre, highlights the cultural significance of tile-making in Saltillo and its impact on the local community.
As a guest lecturer, Nick has educated students at UT Austin and Texas State University on the significance of handmade clay products in interior design and architecture.
Nick's Mayan Zodiac sign is the deer.
