Nick & Nevada Leckie

Wellington's first Creative Mornings speakers are Nick and Nevada from Okewa, a Wellington-based niche rainwear brand focused on creating quality rainwear in limited, ethical runs in New Zealand. This husband and wife duo come from diverse backgrounds in fashion and architecture and have joined forces to tackle rainwear perceptions. Whilst Nick was studying architecture, Nevada was studying fashion and it turns out the two disciplines have given Nick and Nevada a shared creative outlook.

Creating clothing that has a necessity and practicality to it is important to Nevada. She believes creating waterproof garments to help customers better prepare for wild weather makes for an interesting design challenge.

With just two years experience under their belt they share what life is like starting a business in their twenties, why and how they got underway and their plans for the future. They muse about the shifting market trends around fashion production and distribution and dive into why transparency is so important in today's fashion culture.
