About the speaker

M. Nila is a transgender social worker, community leader, and Home Guard with the Tamil Nadu Police Department. With over 15 years of experience in social development, healthcare advocacy, and transgender rights, she has dedicated her life to building pathways of dignity, employment, and inclusion for marginalized communities.
Nila began her journey as a peer health educator with SWAM, Chennai, working closely with people living with HIV and the transgender community. Over the years, she has grown into a powerful community organiser, trainer, and mentor, collaborating with organisations such as APAC, UDHAYAM, Start India Foundation, and CMDA–NULM (TNSDC Corporation of Chennai). Her work has focused on public health, skill development, women’s empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable groups.
She is also the founder of Pharm Foundation, an organisation committed to uplifting cis and trans women and children through education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
Alongside her social work, Nila is an accomplished artist, folk dancer, lyricist, and rapper. Through the Aravani Art Project and Chennai Photo Biennale, she has used art as a powerful tool for social change—challenging stereotypes and celebrating transgender identity.
In 2026, Nila made history by joining the Tamil Nadu Police Home Guards, becoming a symbol of resilience, courage, and inclusion in public service.
Her contributions have been recognised with prestigious awards including the Rajyapuraskar Award (Scout & Guide Movement), the Ramanujacharya–Ambedkar Award, the Vocational Excellence Award by Rotary Club of Chennai Renaissance, and the Super Start E Awards 2020.
At Koorsoo – A Glimmer of Hope, Nila brings not just her story, but a message to the world:
No matter where you come from, your identity is your strength, and hope can transform even the darkest journey into light.
