A person or community that adapts by moving — whether across landscapes, cultures, or ideas.
Maybe we are all nomads in our own way, shaping who we become by what we choose to carry forward.
About the speaker
Jessica Moon Bernstein is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans public art, installation, collage, painting, and sculpture. Her practice explores the relationship between humans and the natural world, often giving voice to animals and reflecting on our environmental impact. With Palestinian, Latinx, Indigenous Central American, Irish, and Jewish ancestry, Jessica’s richly layered heritage and lifelong curiosity shape everything she creates. Her work frequently addresses themes of environmental conservation, cultural identity, and the interplay between human and natural worlds. She creates murals, paintings, and collages, often depicting animals to give them a voice they might not otherwise have. Her installations and mixed-media works have been exhibited at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Houston Art League, and Denver’s Biennial of the Americas. She has created public artworks nationally and internationally, including a mural for the U.S. Embassy in China, and has been awarded artist residencies at the BAER Art Center in Iceland and Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado. Living in a yurt and traveling by horseback through Mongolia’s remote western region shaped her deep connection to place and story. As a former Peace Corps volunteer and backcountry travel guide in Mongolia, she led expeditions through rugged terrain and nomadic communities—experiences that continue to inform her creative process and sense of movement. Jessica chases high-alpine adventures wherever she can find them—trail running, hiking, skiing in the backcountry, or pedaling up remote mountain passes. When not making or teaching art, she’s often exploring the mountains with her dog, who may or may not be part tiger-fox. Whether through creative work, outdoor adventure, or quiet observation, she remains endlessly curious about the stories that connect us to place—and to one another.

“I paint animals because they speak in ways we’ve forgotten to hear. Through them, I remember how to listen.”
