About the speaker
Paul Vanouse is an artist and professor of Art at the University at Buffalo, NY, where he is the founding director of the Coalesce Center for Biological Art. Interdisciplinarity and impassioned amateurism guide his art practice. His recent projects, “Latent Figure Protocol”, “Suspect Inversion Center” and “America Project” use molecular biology techniques to challenge misleading “DNA-hype”, such as the idea that “DNA Is Destiny”. His artwork has been exhibited in over 25 countries and widely across the US. Venues have included, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, New Museum in New York, Museo Nacional in Buenos Aires, Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, ZKM in Karlsrhue, Louvre in Paris and Albright-Knox in Buffalo. Vanouse’s work has been funded by Rockefeller Foundation, Creative Capital Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Sun Microsystems, National Endowment for the Arts and the National Science Foundation. His scent-based, bio-media artwork, Labor, was awarded a Golden Nica at Ars Electronica, 2019. He has an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University.
