About the speaker

An Atlanta native, Culinary Director and Partner Ron Hsu brings culinary chops from Michelin-starred Le Bernardin and Le Colonial, both internationally acclaimed NYC restaurants. He served as Executive Sous Chef at Le Bernardin before taking an Executive Chef position at Le Colonial and then returning to Le Bernardin as Creative Director.

Lazy Betty, Hsu’s first restaurant, opened in February 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. A modern and inventive restaurant also managed by Executive Chef/Partner Aaron Phillips and Ron’s siblings Anita Hsu and Howard Hsu, Lazy Betty serves tasting menus that showcase refined dishes. Each course is designed by Hsu and Phillips to enhance the overall experience of the visit, featuring an array of cooking styles and flavors, just as each ingredient plays a unique role in the composition of the dish.

Hsu and Phillips recently announced the summer 2021 opening of Juniper Cafe, a modern Vietnamese cafe and bakery at Westside Village, where Marietta Boulevard meets Moores Mill in Atlanta’s West Midtown neighborhood. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the casual, colorful restaurant will feature Vietnamese specialties, like pho, noodle salads (bĂșn), banh mis, summer rolls and housemade sausages, as well as made-from-scratch pastries and fun shaved ice options for kids and adults, including Coconut Shaved Ice with mochi and fresh mangoes and strawberries. Shaved Ice can also be topped with ice cream.

Hsu’s cooking showcases a variety of cuisines and techniques that use the highest quality ingredients available. He was featured on Netflix’s cooking series “The Final Table,” which premiered in November 2018, and since opening in March 2019, Lazy Betty has received great acclaim. Lazy Betty was named a 2020 James Beard Award semifinalist for “Best New Restaurant.” The restaurant was awarded three-star reviews from both The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Atlanta Magazine, and it was also named “Best New Restaurant" by Atlanta Magazine and “Restaurant of the Year” by Eater Atlanta. Nationally, the restaurant has been covered by Forbes, Travel Channel, Eater National, bon appĂ©tit, Garden & Gun and more, and was recently included on CondĂ© Nast Traveler's "22 Best Restaurants in Atlanta" list and on Thrillist's "Best New Restaurants 2019" list.
