Most of us are naturally curious and driven by an intrinsic desire to learn new things through experimentation and playfulness. However, there is a tendency for radical ideas and daring proposals to be boxed into existing frameworks and assumptions.

We are unlearning our ability to treat experiments for what they are: A leap into the unknown. How can we relearn how to experiment and have the courage to pursue ideas because they are meaningful and authentic, not because they confirm existing expectations? In his talk, Andreas will explore how experiences are getting commodified in a time of quantification and automation. There is a tendency to standardize and ignore the need to create value. At the same time, we all strive for and seek out authentic experiences that help us get out of our “quantified selves” and feel touched, moved, and impacted.

About the speaker

Andreas Benker is a so-called T-shaped professional, having studied and worked for several years across the business, engineering and design domains. While working for several years in the medical device R&D environment as a usability engineer, he wrote his PhD on user knowledge and innovation at the Aalto University School of Business. Then he joined a Finnish mobility scale-up, as head of customer insights, before developing new business models in a bigger corporate consumer goods company as Service Design Lead. The red thread that ties these chapters together has been the focus on people and embedding their needs, wishes, and expectations in the search for value creation.

In his current role as Lead Service Designer at Futurice, he gets to work in often ambiguous environments - the early stages of a service concept development. This work is super exciting for Andreas because it implies balancing the need for testing and iterating while at the same time getting people excited and aligned around the grand vision.
