From sleeping on a cot in Atlanta’s biggest studio to building KC’s creative scene, the Royal Chief shares why he stopped waiting for permission and started creating the culture he wanted to see.

Jamel Thompson, known as the Royal Chief, traces his path from a kid drawing stories on the east side of Kansas City to a recording artist, DJ, host, and community curator shaping the city’s creative landscape. After a Kanye West opening set changed his life in seventh grade, he chased music to Atlanta — sleeping in a studio, touring the country, and learning the industry from the inside. The loss of his older brother became a turning point, teaching him that waiting for permission is the enemy of progress. After returning to KC in 2017, he channeled everything he learned into building what didn’t exist here: DJ platforms like the On Wax Series, the Main Street Movie Club, a beer collaboration with Vine Street Brewery, and a growing body of music rooted in storytelling. His message is simple — stop waiting for someone to open the door and go build your own.

About the speaker

Jamel Thompson—better known by his stage name The Royal Chief—is a Kansas City–born recording artist, storyteller, and cultural curator whose work blends hip-hop, R&B, and soul with a strong sense of place and purpose. Raised by a single mother as the youngest of six, Thompson grew up in Kansas City with a deep encouragement toward reading, creativity, and self-expression. After seeing Kanye West perform as a teenager, he began writing and performing rap, using music as both a creative outlet and a way to process personal loss and life experiences.

Determined to build a career in music, Thompson moved to Atlanta in 2012, where he immersed himself in the industry—at one point living out of his car before gaining access to studio space at Tree Sound Studios. There he learned the craft of recording, production, and songwriting, eventually collaborating with artists connected to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music camp and touring while developing his own style. After releasing early projects and refining his voice, he adopted the name The Royal Chief—a nod to Kansas City’s sports teams and his hometown pride—and returned to Kansas City to grow his audience and contribute to the local music scene.

Today, The Royal Chief continues to release music and perform while expanding into broader cultural work in Kansas City. Known as both an artist and community builder, he organizes creative events such as the OnWax DJ Battle, Juice Jamz, and the Mainstreet Movie Club, bringing together music, film, and community experiences. Through his music and projects, Thompson positions himself as a storyteller who uses art, conversation, and collaboration to connect people and highlight the culture of Kansas City.
