Drawing from personal experience, he speaks about the tools he has used to transform profound experiences of grief into forward momentum within his art practice and career. Through personal reflections, Todd explores how both tangible and intangible tools, from creative practices to community and storytelling, can help us navigate difficult moments and continue moving forward. During the talk, he also shares snippets from his film projects, offering insight into how these tools come to life in his work.

About the speaker

Todd Karehana (Ngai Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Te Arawa, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Ruapani ki Waikaremoana) is an inspiring writer and director passionate about bold, innovative screen craft, and ‘telling Māori stories that aren't the Māori stories we're used to seeing’.

Karehana graduated from The University of Auckland with a Master of Arts in Screen Production in 2016. He has held various story and writing roles on the Māori drama series AHIKĀROA, the children’s animated series THE EXCEPTIONAL SQUAD and the indigenous anthology film WE ARE STILL HERE. He also directed YOUNG AND ON THE PAEPAE for TVNZ, the short documentary NIGHT RIDE for Loading Docs and co-created the immersive audio drama series THE RIVER.
