Ukeme tells her precedent-breaking story of becoming the first person of color to be the mayor in a city that’s over 100 years old.

When Ukeme moved to Upper Arlington, she quickly realized that she and her kids were in a very small minority as people of color. She had a choice— leave and rebuild somewhere new or stay and see what she could do to amplify her voice in the community. It was through the process of asking questions and building coalitions that she learned what the community needed. Through centering curiosity and creating common ground with others who wanted to make a difference, she became a leader in her community.
