Navigating AI: A Collective Conversation Manifesto
It terrifies me and it excites me. That's the conversation that has to be had. And this is the right community to have that conversation.
There's a general statement in business technology that says you you're not going to lose your job because of AI, but you're going to lose your job because there's other people that are going to use AI, right? And my theory is that's the same for artists, right?
I don't necessarily think artists are going to become obsolete, but I do think that if you stay on top of what can be possible, I think you're way ahead of the game. And I think it just makes you more dynamic and impactful in that way.
If you look at electric guitar, it’s just the electrification that technology adds a new sound. An acoustic guitar couldn't do it. So, it's technology augmented music and we all enjoy listening to rock music. So, why don't we see that AI may enable humans to do another level of creation that we were not able to do before?
I'm making a conscious decision about what I want to outsource because I already know how to do that thing. With my daughter, I'm thinking about it a little bit differently because she doesn't know how to do some of those things yet. So, if she automatically starts to outsource that, she'll never learn.
A lot of people here were using Texas Instruments( calculators) early on in middle school, high school. It's not like we're all illiterate in math, right? It's a tool. It depends on how we use it.
Your mind is like a muscle and if you don't use it, it just stops working. And this is one of the worries I do have about AI is that it's making things easy. One thing I've learned in life, there's no free lunch. You have to work and you have to work hard and that's how you get ahead.
I think it's important to point out that we're all going to have different opinions about AI, obviously, so there's not going to be one right opinion in this room. We're not looking to sort of land on what the answer is. We're looking to sort of jumpstart the conversation and hopefully keep the conversation going as a community.
We're really just hoping to have some meaningful conversations around the challenges that creative professionals are facing today. So, huge shout out to Adobe for being the driver behind this new innovative series.
Action point one is stay informed. Just like you're doing today. And I think the Adobe global thing now with CreativeMornings is absolutely brilliant. So, shout out to Adobe for that.
The people who use AI the best are going to be the best managers. And what is a good manager? Is somebody who is able to clearly define a task, but also know exactly the capabilities of the person they're assigning it to. You can clearly define a task and you can give it to someone who doesn't have the skill set, the task isn't going to get done.
Build me a simple HTML app. This is the most useful thing I think, as a non-programmer, you should know about because now you can actually build simple apps that can help you in life.
It's kind of a crazy time in technology where we built a tool and we don't know all of the actual possibilities that it can be used for. Usually, we built a tool specifically to solve a problem. Now we just built a tool, in theory, to solve every problem. And it's kind of weird, because how do we test that it can solve every problem?
AI is a tool. And a tool is a reflection of who uses it.
Can we have an honest conversation about AI, having lived through the last twenty years with the internet and social media, divorced of the people who are behind it and the market forces within which it is being cultivated and grown?
AI is shaping the world in profound ways, but especially for the creative community I think there is a lot of uncertainty about how we're thinking about it and how we're using it. So, what we're doing here is part of a larger collective conversation about the possibilities, the challenges, and the roles we want AI to play in our life.
I work directly in the codebase. I use AI to prototype, design and build every day. I explore ideas in real time, not after handing off to engineering.
We all know with AI it's been a very powerful tool. And I haven't really used any of the visual stuff. I've only use ChatGPT to just kind of stir thinking, to really deep dive into conceptualizing.
I should preface this by saying we are not trying to convince anybody of either side. This is not a debate to see who wins. We're just presenting perspectives.
I've been using AI as a co-creator in order to develop better concepts, better performances… because I want to be more efficient.
Now is the time to really make a difference, to start to learn about AI, and understand these tools and to see how what you can make of it.
Transparency is super important, especially with creativity.
This is an experiment in addressing topics that are impacting us in the creative industry. And we’re starting with AI because it is divisive. It is really challenging us as a creative community. So, we want to take a pulse to hear what’s on your minds.
AI is a tool and a tool is a reflection of who uses it.
