“Do what is necessary”
The sixth mass extinction in the history of the Earth is underway. In Europe, existing species are dying out at a rate 1000 times higher than in the past. In the last 50 years, more than half of vertebrates have disappeared: an incalculable loss in terms of biodiversity. This is not the first massive disappearance of living beings from our planet, but it is the first time that man, one of them, is the cause. For many scientists it is precisely the human being who gives the name to the geological era in which we live: the Anthropocene (from anthropos, man), the era in which, for the first time, the human being conditions and influences the environment with its activities to a greater extent than any other natural phenomenon. Science has been warning us for decades: if we do not change course it will be impossible to guarantee the survival of man on Earth. In ancient Greek, philos means “dear”, “friend”, but in the Homeric poems it also indicates what is “own”, something that is dear to someone because it is “his”. The love of life is today more than ever a struggle that is identified with love for oneself, with the possibility of guaranteeing survival. Yet the disconcerting data of science leave our rulers impassive, who do not seem willing to implement the system change that, alone, could allow future generations to live on a hospitable planet. What to do then? How to communicate the climate and ecological crisis? Extinction Rebellion (XR) is an international movement that uses the instrument of nonviolent civil disobedience to show the emergency in progress and request that measures be taken to stem it. Born in October 2018 in the UK, the movement has rapidly expanded around the world through a widespread network of local groups. By promoting a regenerative and inclusive culture, XR fights against the toxic system in which we are immersed to achieve social and environmental justice, inextricably linked.
