Cristian Lupşa is the editor of Decât o Revistă (DoR), a quarterly magazine covering the stories of modern day Romania. A native Transylvanian who didn’t turn out to be the doctor his family hoped he’d become, Cristian graduated from the University of Bucharest in 2003, and then, in 2005, earned an MA in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, the world’s oldest journalism school. He was a researcher-writer on the second edition of Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel’s The Elements of Journalism, a book he considers his personal bible, and then a reporter for the Christian Science Monitor.

He returned to Romania in 2007, and started working as an editor for the local edition of Esquire, freelanced for various outlets inside and outside the country, and taught narrative journalism to students and professionals. In 2009, Cristian and a group of rebellious journalists started DoR, a magazine predicated on the idea that good nonfiction storytelling can change people and communities. Under his supervision, his staff has won multiple national writing awards. Since 2011, he oversees an international storytelling conference in Bucharest, and continues to teaches journalists, and other professionals about the power of well-told stories.

He spent the 2013-2014 academic year as a fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. When he’s not on duty, he pays close attention to World Wrestling Entertainment.
