May 2026 featuring Movement Festival

CreativeMornings/Detroit returns on May 9th, 9:00am-10:00am at Signal-Return (1345 Division St. Detroit, Michigan 48207) with Managing Director Jane Hoehner and Artistic Director Lynne Avadenka.

In May, the global CreativeMornings community will be speaking on the theme of Freedom. Jane and Lynne will be talking about freedom of the press, the importance of print making, and their creative processes. They will be leading attendees in a print-making demo and space is limited, so be sure to reserve your space. Tickets will be available on May 5th here!

On March 7th, Melissa Price, CEO of dPOP! talked to us about the importance of reflecting the culture of workers through work spaces and how hidden elements in interior design can achieve that. She also talked to us about the historic preservation and the redesign of dPOP!’s underground vault of the former Dime Building. Price and her team also talked about their creative process, which involves beer, unbridled (horse lamp reference) ideas, and the wonders of brightly colored paint. 

dPOP! provided a cereal bar filled with various cereals (some we had forgotten about from our youth!), milks, pop tarts. and, of course, coffee! Afterwards Melissa and her team graciously showed us around their co-working space that they share with Doodle Home and Quicken Loans.

It was a cold day for February’s CreativeMornings/Detroit! We were at Public Pool with Steve Hughes, Jim Boyle and Kathy Leisen talking about their current show ART AS ANTI-ART IS ART. We also spoke about artists, professionalism, creative work, accessibility and the Detroit art scene.

CreativeMornings/Detroit will be talking about the theme of Rebel on February 7th with Steve Hughes of Public Pool (3309 Caniff Hamtramck, Michigan 48212), doors open at 8:30am and the talk begins at 9am and will end by 10am. Claim your free ticket here!

Public Pool’s current show ART AS ANTI-ART IS ART questions what art is, rebelling against conventional expectations of what art “should” be. Steve Hughes will be having a discussion with us about the current show, Public Pool as a cooperative, and their creative processes in the context of the global theme, Rebel. Plus, we will be making art that will be a part of the show!

We were at 5e Gallery with Jeff Sturges and Piper Carter who spoke about the importance of hackerspaces to youth and others in building confidence, skills and community.

The 5e Sonic Maker Space and the Mt. Elliott Makerspace each engage and empower youth through applied science, technology, engineering, math, and arts education.

Piper Carter is a world renown photographer and has worked with publications such as Vogue, Elle and New York Times. She is a Howard University Alumni and also attended FIT receiving a BFA in Photography & Digital Media. Carter is co-Owner of 5e Gallery, co-Founder of the Foundation Celebrating Women in Hip Hop, Multimedia Artist for Jessica Care Moore’s Black Women Rock, & Founding member of the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition.

Jeff Sturges loves making things, connecting people, and hosting potluck dinners. This passion drove him to start makerspaces as the Mt Elliott Makerspace and OmniCorpDetroit. His work on these communities is inspired by “antidisciplinary” experiences at the The Sustainable South Bronx GreenFab program, the NYCResistor hackerspace, Cranbrook Academy of Art and the MIT Media Lab. Jeff believes that through collaborative making, tinkering, and learning, We the People will create happier, healthier, and more meaningful lives.

For December 6th’s CreativeMornings/Detroit, we will be speaking about the theme of Make with Bridget Russo, Shinola’s Marketing Director and Jen Guarino, Head of Shinola's Leather Division and a co-founder of the Makers Coalition. Free tickets are now available here!

Detroit has a significant legacy of manufacturing, supported by craftspeople, designers, and entrepreneurs. Shinola is reviving this tradition through their Detroit based factory within the College for Creative Studies’ Taubman Center and with other factories and partners throughout the US. Similarly supporting the significance of manufacturing and design, The Makers Coalition works to restore and build the industrial sewing heritage of America.

Carrie Morris and Emilia Javanica co-curate The Performance Laboratory, a series focused on providing a forum for new short works and works in progress. The Performance Laboratory aims to facilitate impassioned dialogue around the possibilities that lie within performance. Their goal is to establish a consistent venue for ideas to be shared and developed, new artistic partnerships to be made, and a supportive and diverse community to gather.
