This month’s CreativeMornings/Jerusalem’s theme is TABOO with Zaki Djemal, who will be talking about the Jerusalem Double project bringing East Jerusalem Jews and Arabs together over a good old game of backgammon.

“ הבעיה המרכזית איתה אנו מנסים להתמודד ב״דאבל ירושלמי״ - אליפות ירושלים הערבית יהודית בשש בש- היא שיהודים וערבים, תושבי מזרח ומערב כלל אינם נפגשים זה עם זה. אני מתכוון למפגשים שהם מעבר למפגשים שכופה המציאות בבתי החולים, ברכבת או בתור בסופר. אני גם לא מתכוון למפגשים שהם פוליטיים וטעונים בהגדרה כמו הפגנות או מחאות משותפות. אני מדבר על מפגשים נינוחים המפגישים בין תושבי מזרח ומערב העיר באווירה טובה ומזמינה לכולם במסגרת המחוברת חיבור מותאם לכלל תושבי העיר. הפתרון שלנו, הוא השש-בש, כן, ירושלים צריכה שש-בש!

כי בדיוק כמו שבדיחה טובה מסוגלת להאיר באופן מדויק את הרבדים הכי עמוקים של הקיום כך גם בכוחו של משחק טוב ללמד את המשחקים בו שיעור חשוב לגבי המציאות. והשש-בש הוא בלי שום ספק המשחק הטוב ביותר שיש לירושלים להציע לתושביה כדי ללמוד משהו חשוב מאוד על עצמם. השש-בש מחובר חיבור ארוך שנים לירושלים, הוא מוכר ואהוב על כל תושביה. והוא מהווה את הפלטפורמה האידיאלית למפגש בין שני בני אדם היושבים ומשחקים סביב אותו לוח. חוקיו של המשחק פשוטים, כל אחד יכול לשחק, כל אחד יכול לנצח. שש-בש לא משחקים בכובד ראש, יש בו משהו קליל שיוצר חיבור מיידי בין שני השחקנים. השש-בש אומנם דורש משחקניו לחשב את צעדיהם ולשקול את כל התרחישים אך בסופו של דבר הוא מלמד שיש מקום גם למזל בחיים ושלא הכל תלוי בנו, כי בירושלים כידוע גם לכוחות עליונים יש תפקיד מרכזי…

כשיצאנו לדרך לפני חודשיים החלטנו לקיים את הטורניר הראשון בבית חנינא, כי חשוב לנו מאוד להשיג שתי מטרות בדאבל ירושלמי אחד: גם להפגיש בין יהודים לערבים בצורה מהנה בירושלים וגם להביא אירועי תרבות לשכונות מזרח העיר. האירוע הראשון התקיים בבוסתן של מחמוד אל ריפעי, שותפינו לדרך ולחזון השש-בש הירושלמי. התרגשנו ושמחנו לגלות שעלינו על משהו שיש לו ביקוש גדול בעיר: כ-32 שחקנים ו150 איש הגיעו לאותו טורניר. כולל שליש יהודים ממערב העיר. זה לא שלא היו לחלק מהם חששות, גם לנו היו, אבל הטורניר היה מוצלח מאוד. וכשברקע תזמורת הבית המעורבת שלנו ניגנה מוזיקה ערבית קלאסית מצויינת שהשתלבה מצויין עם שקשוק הקוביות ומתיקות הקפה והבקלאוות התחושה הייתה נורמלית מאוד וחשוב מכך- ירושלמית מאוד. כי אירוע כזה לא יכל להתקיים בשום מקום אחר בעולם.”

״הכל זה מסתורי. שום דבר אנו לא מבינים עד הסוף ובשום דבר. הרעיון הזה שבאמצעות המוח אנו מנסים להבין את המוח הוא תהליך מסתורי ביותר״, כך אומר פרופ׳ עידן שגב ומוסיף ״אנו נוטים להתייחס למחשב כהעתק של המוח עם זכרון ועיבוד מידע, אבל במקביל גם מתייחסים למוח שלנו כמכונה פונקציונלית בלבד״.

אני חולם שנכיר את המכניקה של ההתנהגות האנושית ובעתיד נוכל לרפא אותו ממחלות ולעודד יכולות מסוימים. זו תיאוריה שלמה שצריך להמשיך לפתח ולחבר, חוקרים מתחומים שונים כמו machine learniing ופסיכולוגיה התנהגותית. כיום אני בעיקר חוקר תאים אנושיים ותאי עכבר. וזו פנטסיה אחת גדולה.

היצירתיות של המוח היא תהליכי למידה, אנו לא מבינים עד היום כיצד אדם ממשיג מטאפורות או כותב שירה. אולי ביום שבו נבין את מנגנון הלמידה במוח, נוכל לחנך ללמידה באמצעים ביולוגיים כמו קצב למידה וכלים מגוונים לרכישת ידע״.

המוח הוא מכונה פלסטית מופלאה שאנו עדין לא מכירים אותה. עצם המודעות לתהליכים המתרחשים שם יכול להשפיע על צורת המחשבה והיצירה כולה, ואולי לא, אבל לפחות נדע מה הוא שווה. - פרופסור עידן שגב, פרופסור לנוירופיזיולוגיה באוניברסיטה העברית, חקר נפלאות המוח.

Q&A with Sha’anan Streett at our next SOUND event. 

Sha'anan was born in 1971 in Jerusalem, where he still lives today. He studied in the high school for environmental studies in Israel’s desert - The Negev, and served his compulsory army service as part of the Nahal paratroops brigade.

After traveling Israel and the world for several years, years in which he kept himself occupied by (among other things) tending bars, growing chickens, and assisting electricians, he formed Hadag Nahash with four other friends (today there are six members in the band). In the years that passed since, Hadag Nahash has recorded and released seven albums all of which achieved both critical acclaim and significant record sales. Apart from his work in Hadag Nahash (as singer and lyricist) he has written articles and opinion columns in many newspapers and web sites. He started a non profit organization (“The One Shekel Featival”), translated a play from English (“About the Oranges”), wrote a screenplay with Avi Nesher (“The Wonders”), opened a bar in Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda market district (“Casino De Paris”) and is developing a TV series.

Sha'anan is married and has two boys and a girl. He hopes for the best.

What inspires your creativity? 

“Can’t pin it to one thing. I’d have to say, people. Amazing ones. People who do their ‘thing’ in an perfect way with genuine love and passion. I also love combining two different fields of design/art/materials into one, that really inspires my work. On a personal level, the outdoors really helps me connect to myself. Sometimes you just need to leave everything and go for a walk around nature.” - Daniel Nahmias, 29, Food, Installation & Industrial Designer

“Now I’m making a skirt from old shirts. Men don’t buy new clothing, and often like to wear a piece until it’s really worn out. For example, this is a shirt of my father’s and he has a lot of shirts he doesn’t wear anymore, but still keeps lying around. That’s why I don’t do menswear because they wear their clothes so many times, until they’re worn out.

So I first iron it, and then I make the cuts. I cut it into whatever comes to mind. I try to do different cuts. Like this one is with the rubber here, and this one has the pockets here. Sometimes what’s nice about designing clothing from clothing, is that you’re restricted to the amount of fabric you have to work with. It can be frustrating when you want to do something else that requires more fabric, but it’s also great, because it requires you to think out of the box. In design, when you have the option to do everything, and a million options, it’s hard to decide what you want to do. It makes you think creatively and because you have limited options you get to play with it. The dream for the future is to have this store filled with mainly things I designed. But I know this will take time, because I also do alterations now, but slowly slowly.”

Marky Funk is a member of the band “The Apples”, however, not only is he part of this band but he writes his own music, produces music, works as a DJ and records collections all over the country as well as in Europe.
Although Markey has only lived in Jerusalem from the age of 16, he feels most natural and at home in this city. In his opinion Jerusalem is an environment that inspires interest and creativity more than anywhere else.

How would you describe yourself in one word?
Learner
The reason being that every subject that I happen to deal with - whether it be a music production, writing, or record collecting -  always comes hand in hand with study, research, discovery and a process of learning new things. This one of my favourite factors about every creative process.

How do you change the world every day?
As long as my music or my ideas or my DJ-sets change someone’s life (even if for a few moments) - my mission is accomplished.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
It’s really hard to tell. I rarely think far beyond a particular current project (or projects). I hope to keep on touring (both with The Apples, and as a DJ), as I’ve been doing in the last 3 years, and keep visiting new places and meeting new audiences. I hope to have more collaborative projects in the near future.  As much as I love being in total control over my music, nothing compares to the magic that happens when two or more minds create together.

What’s your message to the world right now?
Share your knowledge. Never stop discovering new things.

במילה אחת, כיצד היית מגדיר את עצמך?
למדן (Learner)
בין אם אני עוסק בהפקת מוזיקה, כתיבה או הקלטת אלבומים, אני תמיד לומד, חוקר ומגלה דברים חדשים. זו הדרך בה אני עובד, ומפתח כל פעילות יצירתית. ואני אוהב את זה בדיוק ככה.

כיצד את משנה את העולם בכל יום?
כל עוד המוזיקה שלי, הרעיונות שלי ומערכי ה-DJ שלי מצליחים לשנות ולהשפיע, אפילו לכמה רגעים, על מישהו או מישהו, המשימה שלי הסתיימה.
אני לא מפריד בין העבודה לבין חיי הפרטיים. אבל תחומי העניין שלי בתוך המוזיקה מגוונים, מה שאני מפיק יכול להיות מאוד שונה ממה שאני מתקלט. זו דרך חיים.

איפה נמצא אותך בעוד 5 שנים?
לעתים נדירות אני מצליח לחשוב רחוק יותר מהפרוייקטים שאני עובד עליהם ממש עכשיו. טוב לי במקום שאני נמצא בו, זאת אומרת, אני מקווה להמשיך להופיע עם התפוחים ולתקלט כ- DJ כמו ב-3 שנים האחרונות.
אני מאוד אוהב להכיר קהלים ומקומות חדשים, אז להכיר עוד יהיה מצוין. במקביל, אני מקווה לשתף פעולה עם אמנים נוספים - למרות שאני אוהב ליצור בעצמי את המוזיקה, שום דבר לא משתווה לתחושה הקסומה כששני מוחות מצליחים לייצר עיבוד מוזיקלי טוב.

Q&A with Yonatan
You’ve definitely heard his name before. Yonatan Blumenfeld - trained and certified in ‘Spoken-word’, singer-songwriter in his band Dirty Fly and creator of the satirical page ‘for children only’. Blumenfeld is a proud descendant of a family who has lived in Jerusalem for nine generations. The following interview was taken with him after his show at Creative Morning last event.

How would you describe yourself in one word?
Awkward

How do you change the world every day?
It is important to me to try and inspire others to think critically. I always try to think of ways to address tough or taboo topics in a more accessible and approachable way, topics that the average audience would be horrified to hear directly. It can be through all sorts of means. Children’s songs that address certain horrors, rhythms and spoken word. The main is to bring home certain essential issues through the window or the back door, issues that people would find difficult to welcome in through the front entrance.
Besides for this goal, I also try to take the simple aspects of life and apply them into my immediate environment. We live in an environment where every small thing has the potential to turn into an ideology. But life is complicated and complexed enough without many of these invented ideas.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
On a stage at Wembley Stadium with my band and/or being a waiter.

Message to the world?
You don’t have to hurry up chips on the fire

נו, את שמו כבר בטוח שמעתם קודם לכן. ונראה שהוא בדרך לכבוש את העולם. יונתן בלומנפלד הוא אמן ספוקן-וורד יוצא דופן, זמר-יוצר בלהקת dirty-fly ובעמוד הסאטירי ״לילדים בלבד״. בלומנפלד הוא צאצא גאה למשפחה בת 9 דורות בירושלים. תפסנו אותו לשיחה קצרה, קצת אחרי שעלה על הבמה של Creative Morning באירוע חודש שעבר.

במילה אחת, כיצד היית מגדיר את עצמך?

כיצד אתה משנה את העולם בכל יום?
חשוב לי לנסות ולעורר אנשים לחשיבה ביקורתית. אני כל הזמן מנסה לחשוב על דרכים רכות להנגיש תוכן שנחשב קשה או טאבו. נושאים שהקהל הממוצע היה נרתע משמוע באופן ישיר בשגרת היום-יום.

זה יכול להיות בכל מיני דרכים- שירי ילדים שמדברים על זוועות, ספוקן-וורד קצבי או המוזיקה שאני עושה. אני מצליח להכניס תוכן חדש לביתם של אנשים, דרך החלון או דרך הדלת האחורית. מה שבדרך כלל הם היו מתקשים להכניס בדלת הראשית.

חוץ מזה אני גם משתדל לקחת את החיים בפשטות ולהחיל את זה על הסביבה הקרובה שלי, זה מקל מאוד על כולנו. אני מגיע מסביבה שבה כל דבר קטן יכול להפוך לאידיאולוגיה, אבל החיים מספיק קשים ומורכבים גם בלי רעיונות מומצאים.

Q&A with Eyelet

How would you describe yourself in one word?
Choreographer.
I love the parallels within the world of dance. In it you can create an aesthetic feeling combined with a holistic experience in front of an audience. A choreographer works day and night in order to find that formula that combines movement, style, music and then creates a balance between them all.
In recent years I have worked with different types of building blocks such as diverse technologies and people with varying talents in order to create an image editing application, which to me, feels like a similar experience to the world of choreography.

How do you change the world every day?

I am part of a team that develops high quality as well as simple tools for creating and editing images on your mobile device. We enable and empower people to express their abilities by means of creative designs that previously were not presented to them simply because they lacked the tools or the knowledge (It either being too expensive or complicated, like Photoshop).

My personal part as well as the other designers in the team, is to use technology in order to provide access to image processing software that will allow an experience for the user which is easy and fun! The rating of the app is very positive, people who previously only could dream of creating the images and shapes before, are now able to do exactly what they want. This new reality for these users really moves me all the time.  

However, in general I deal with projects that have a positive impact like social initiatives. For example, a few years ago I initiated a project in which programmers and designers came together to improve the sites on non-profit organizations in the country. I was then asked to expand this project to overseas and since then even larger companies have adopted this model.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Working on projects that involve technology and art, working on projects in which make information more accessible and changing perceptions as well as writing a book on changes in the world of design that express other cultural changes. Truth is, I ’ve been doing some of these things already!

What is your message to the world?
The most powerful message that I was ever taught was when I did my service in unit 8200. Then it was proven to me that ‘Anything is possible’. In our era, when we are capable of advancing technology in ways that yesterday would not have been possible, and when all of the time, all over the world, new great ideas are popping up, and people are doing incredible things, we have to get used to the state of mind in which everything and anything is possible. The question becomes- what is the best way to get there. My message is to choose to surround yourself with people of the same state of mind, and watch how that will change your own perspective of the world.

כריאוגרפית
אני אוהבת את ההקבלה לעולם הריקוד כי יש בו תחושה אסתטית וחוויה הוליסטית אצל הקהל. הכריאוגרף עובד ימים כלילות ומוצא את הנוסחה שתשלב תנועה, סגנון, מוזיקה ותיצור איזון בניהם.
בשנים האחרונות, עבדתי עם סוגים שונים של אבני בניין כמו מיתוג, פיתוח טכנולוגי ועםאנשים בעלי כישורים מגוונים שפעלו יחד כדי ליצור אפליקציה לעריכה ועיבוד תמונות, זה מרגיש לי בדיוק אותו הדבר.

כיצד את משנה את העולם בכל יום?
אני חלק מצוות שמפתח כלים איכותיים ופשוטים ליצירה ועריכה של תמונות במובייל. האפליקציות שלנו מאפשרות לאנשים להעצים פרי דמיונם, ליצור ולבטא את את יכולתיהם באמצעות יצירת עיצובים שקודם לכן לא יכלו כי האפשרות לא הייתה נגישה להם או כי לא היה להם את הכלים ואת הידע לעשות זאת (יקרים או מורכבים מידי, כמו פוטושופ).

החלק שלי ושל שאר המעצבים בעבודה הוא להשתמש בטכנולוגיה כדי להנגיש את תוכנות עיבוד התמונה בקלות ולאפשר חוויה שהיא כיפית. הפידבקים על האפליקציה מאוד חיוביים, אנשים שלא חשבו שהם יודעים ליצור, עושים דברים מדהימים וכאלו שעיצבו קודם לכן אומרים שכעת הם יכולים לעשות ״בדיוק״ את מה שהם היו רוצים. זה מרגש אותי מאוד, וכל פעם מחדש.

באופן כללי, אני מתעסקת בפרוייקטים שיש להם אימפקט חיובי כמו יוזמות חברתיות. אני עושה זאת בדרך כלל עם קשר לעיצוב ואפיון. למשל לפני כמה שנים יזמתי האקתונים שבו נפגשו מתכנתים ומעצבים כדי לשפר אתרים של עמותות בארץ. אחר כך ביקשו שנעשה את זה גם בחו״ל. ומאז חברות גדולות גם אימצו את המודל הזה.

איפה נמצא אותך בעוד 5 שנים?

עובדת על פרוייקטים שמערבים טכנולוגיה ואמנות, עובדת על פרוייקטים שמנגישים מידע ומשנים תפיסות, כותבת ספר על UX ועל שינויים בעיצוב שמבטאים שינויים תרבותיים אחרים. בעצם אני כבר עושה חלק מהדברים האלה!

מסר לעולם

המסר הכי חזק שלימדו אותי כששירתתי ביחידת 8200 וגם הוכיחו לי אותו היה ״הכל אפשרי״. בעידן בו אפשר לעשות טכנולוגית דברים שאתמול לא ניתן היה, ושכל הזמן, בכל העולם, צצים רעיונות טובים ואנשים מתגייסים לעשות דברים מדהימים, צריך להתרגל להיות ב- state of mind שכנראה הכל אפשרי, והשאלה הופכת להיות - מה הדרך הכי טובה להגיע לשם. המסר שלי הוא לבחור להיות בסביבה של אנשים בעלי אותו state of mind ותראו איך זה משנה את הפרספקטיבה שלכם על העולם.
