About the speaker

To kick off this month's event with style, we are excited to showcase a live performance by Taras Luka!

Ukrainian jazz and classic accordionist, composer to theatre and film, Luka graduated from the Odesa National Music Academy (Ukraine) with a master’s degree in music. During his musical career, he wrote a lot of original music for the accordion and more. The last of the works is a jazz album for accordion and jazz quintet called “Part of the Journey,” which was released in 2023 and presented at the 2024 Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Luka also worked as a composer, conductor and music director in the theatre for several years. One of his last works was “Choral of Freedom” for symphony orchestra, choir and soprano solo (dedicated to all the children who died in the war in Ukraine). The world premiere occurred in Bologna (Italy) in Teatro Comunale de Bologna, and his piece was selected for the “Hugh Davidson Composer Readings 2024” (Victoria Symphony Orchestra). Over the past few years, he played many concerts in Germany, Italy, Poland, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Canada, and USA.
