About the speaker

Sean C. Duncan is a scholar and teacher of games, gaming culture, and game design. He is currently a lecturer in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia, where he regularly teaches courses on games and play, critical game design, analog games, and understanding the culture of gaming. His research has covered games for change, impact, and learning, with an increased focus on understanding how we play in our everyday lives. He is the co-editor (with Elisabeth Gee) of Learning in Video Game Affinity Spaces, published by Peter Lang Publishers in 2012.
Dr. Duncan earned his Ph.D. in 2009 as part of the Games+Learning+Society group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and previous to his arrival in Charlottesville he taught undergraduates and graduate students in Miami University of Ohio’s Interactive Media Studies program, as well as Indiana University’s Learning Sciences program. He has also worked as a Manager of Digital Media for Project Dragonfly, and in user experience at Microsoft.
