Professional adventurer, journalist, surfer, speaker, and all around maverick Shelby Stanger opens our eyes to the infinite possibilities that await us once we simply start our journey.

Shelby Stanger talks about her experience as a journalist on Van’s Warped Tour, her first huge wave, and her podcast she sold to REI. Shelby encourages us all to take the plunge into life and make the most of this crazy time.

About the speaker

A seasoned journalist and top-ranked podcaster, Shelby Stanger’s work and podcasts have been featured everywhere from The New York Times and The San Diego Union Tribune to Outside Magazine, ESPN and so many more. Curious about her subjects and willing to go to great lengths in her research, Shelby has surfed from New Jersey to New Zealand, studied with a breath guru, fasted for six days on only water, paddled down a portion of the Amazon River, given up talking (for not very long) and interviewed countless CEOs, athletes, and wellness experts on assignment for major international publications.

Her curiosity and playful demeanor doubles as a secret interview weapon, loosening up guests on the most serious of topics. With a knack for audio stories, Shelby created and sold her first podcast about adventure called Wild Ideas Worth Living to REI Co-Op in 2020 (she remains the host) and recently hosted an award-winning travel show for Lufthansa called Life Changing Places. Her latest project, Vitamin Joy, which launches in June of 2020, has a standout crew of guests, offering prescriptions for having more health, humor and fun in your everyday life.

Prior to Podcasting, Shelby Stanger served as a marketing strategist and journalist working in house for brands like Vans and Body Glove, and as a consultant for places like Nike, prAna and Eagle Creek, while writing for publications like Shop-Eat-Surf.com, The San Diego Union Tribune, Outside and more.

In addition to her work as a storyteller and journalist, Shelby is a longtime board member and volunteer for Outdoor Outreach, a non-profit that helps empower at-risk kids in San Diego through outdoor programming like rock climbing, snowboarding and hiking. Currently she also helps teach classes to people who want to Start, Grow and Monetize their own podcast shows.

The common thread to everything she does: A little adventure is life’s antidote. To second chances. To soul seeking. To success.
