Save The Date! Our next CreativeMornings will be on June 27th with Industrial Designer Jamie McLellan, hosted at the Designworks Auckland Offices! Registrations open June 23rd!

If simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, then this month’s theme is our most cosmopolitan yet. We’re talking about “Minimal” across 80+ chapters around the world. The theme was chosen by our Aarhus team and we were thrilled to have Andrew Neyeras the month’s illustrator.

Best said by a past CreativeMornings/NewYork speaker, and author of The Laws of Simplicity:

“Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful.” ―John Maeda

This month is all about the meaningful Maeda describes. Speakers this month will look at what ‘Minimal’ means in creativity and design, as well as the role it plays in our lives.

As always, free tickets are available starting the Monday before the talk.

Last Friday it was time to break free, as Graphic Designer and Founder of Threaded Magazine Kyra Clarke spoke about Creative Freedom for the May 2014 installment of CreativeMornings/ Auckland.

The morning was hosted by the super cool crew at LOT23 and proudly brought to you by CurativeLittle Lot, and AUT with coffee and water generously provided by Coffee Supreme and Antipodes

And thanks to Aria Taylor from Curative for taking the photos - Check out the full set here: CreativeMornings /AKL with Threaded Magazine »

Morning Person: Meet Nat

We have an amazing team of volunteers and partners who help us make CreativeMornings happen every month. We think they’re super cool and you should totally meet them.

This week: Meet Natalie Tozer from LOT23, our host for tomorrows CreativeMornings! LOT23 is a creative haven committed to creating opportunities for creative people to connect and collaborate. On site you’ll find a cafe, a film/photography studio, a gallery, Brownstreet film and video production company, Threaded Magazine and an artist (or two!) in residence.

  1. Who are you?
Maker of art, Mother of dragons, Curator at LOT23
  2. What gets you up in the morning?
After seemingly searching and striving for years to get my shit together, it feels like I might have just nailed it - doing what I love, and appreciating that fact. I’m passionate about connecting creative people, and producing creative events and experiences. I highly value collaboration and enquiry, and find it amusing that my own personal art form ironically involves a repetitive process alone in a studio!  Perhaps art is pain after all??
  3. Explain Lot 23 in Five words or less.
    Eat, Drink, Make, See, Love!
  4. What’s a surprising fact about you?
    I’m a recovering claustrophobic.
  5. What is your favourite thing about Auckland?
I’m really proud of the waterfront/Britomart/viaduct transformation, it just feels so much more international, not to mention the Auckland Art Gallery and the increasing number of free public art events around the city.
  6. Best breakfast you’ve ever had?
Des Wilson’s Baked Baghdad eggs w fresh herbs and tomato Kasundi sauce - and a Brazil flat white of course!  Hmmmm

  7. Best piece of advice you’ve received?
What other people think of you is their business.
  8. Who would you love to hear speak?
I’d love to spend an afternoon with Frida Khalo.
Frida has been described as: “…one of history’s grand divas…a tequila-slamming, dirty joke-telling smoker, bi-sexual that hobbled about her bohemian barrio in lavish indigenous dress and threw festive dinner parties for the likes of Leon Trotsky, poet Pablo Neruda, Nelson Rockefeller, and her on-again, off-again husband, muralist Diego Rivera." So… who else wants to come!  But seriously, she is celebrated for her uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.  I’d just love to hear some of her stories of love, life and art over a red wine or two.
  9. Secret Superpower?
    I can actually listen.
  10. What truly makes a person free?
    Becoming selfless.

Find out more about LOT23 over on their website, or head in to check it out IRL. And you should definitely try their Island Style Raw Fish. It’s as good as my Papa’s and his is gooooooood so that’s pretty high praise.
