7 Way to Explore May’s Theme, RESILIENT

We’re thrilled to dive deeper into this month’s theme because we all know a little bit about it after the past year.

To be resilient is to be adaptable. It’s a way of being that’s flexible and alive, bouncing with the stuff of survival: learning, evolving, and intertwining our roots to share resources and to create a strong anchor of collective care. Like trees in a storm, it means swaying instead of snapping.

Persevering in the face of hardship and heartbreak is not easy, to say the least. To heal, to grieve, to bend but not break? It requires time and dedication to build these muscles of resilience.

As we gear up to hear from the amazing Ron Hsu of Lazy Betty on May 28, consider pondering May’s theme by asking yourself: What can you do today to help build strength and ease for the future?

Not sure where to start? We got you. We’ve rounded up seven insightful pieces that explore resilience personally and professionally.

TED Talk: 3 Secrets of Resilient People

When tough moments arise in life, resilience researcher Lucy Hone recommends three ways to better brave adversity, overcome struggles and face whatever may come your way with fortitude and grace.

Book: Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant

“I think of resilience as the strength and speed of our response to adversity,” says Adam Grant, psychologist and co-author of Option B. To walk through those challenges and sorrows and come out on the other side healed and not overcome? It requires time and effort, just like anything else. “It’s a skill set we work on throughout our lives.”

Book: Unbowed by Wangari Maathai

Aside from direct advice on resilience, others’ lived experiences can teach us a lot about resilience in action. "This memoir by a Kenyan environmental and political activist is a story of resilience and determination,” says Laura Boushnak, photographer and TED speaker. “Born in rural Kenya, Maathai ended up being the first woman from her country to receive a PhD, as well as head a university department. Through a foundation she established, she helped restore indigenous forests while also assisting rural women by paying them to plant trees in their villages. Without a doubt, her courageous story shows how we can make the best out of our circumstances, despite the challenges.”

Ahead of our amazing upcoming FieldTrip on how to support the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community at home, we wanted to call on the creative minds of Atlanta to consider using their unique talents to support an initiative, called 3in5, that helps address #StopAsianHate.

Here’s what you need to know:

The Why: Did you know that 3 in 5 Asians say they rarely if ever see themselves represented in ads and marketing media? Together, we can dare to tell Asian stories. We can flip being ignored, invisible and erased into being celebrated, heard and seen.

Where You Come In: Develop and submit completed PSAs to support Asian storytelling by April 23.

Omnicom has collected donated airtime from 35+ media in the U.S., ready to go live on May 1. Eric Toda (Facebook), Musa Tariq (GoFundMe) and Daniel Oh (Marina Maher) will select the winning creative to run throughout Asian American Pacific Heritage Month (AAPHM).

There isn’t a lot of time to act and produce work, but take your passion, take your stories, and take the ways we learned to create in new ways during COVID-19 to act now!

Get started here: http://www.threeinfive.com/

Then, Participate Every Day: Go beyond creating PSAs to adopt the initiative.

  • Pledge your organization to “3 in 5.” Identify ways to represent diverse stories and individuals in May for AAPHM.
  • Take the initiative to your members, partners and clients and ask them to participate in the program and pledge their brand to 3 in 5 in May and beyond!
  • Meet One of the Forces Behind 3in5

Championing the 3in5 campaign is Soon Mee Kim, Global Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer at ‎Omnicom Public Relations Group. She'll join CreativeMornings Atlanta on April 21 to share her meaningful work in DEI and share ways we can all take action to support the API community every day.

Before the event, our FieldTrip captain, Julia Levy, talked with Soon Mee about her professional path and the 3in5 initiative. Check out the conversation here.

Join us for a virtual Field Trip next Thursday 2/18 at 9am with Civic Dinners, a platform that brings people together to have conversations that matter. In our case, we’re hosting a virtual Civic Breakfast.

Civic Dinners was founded in Atlanta and is led by CEO Jenn Graham to create powerful conversations that inspire positive social change.

We will come together for the debut of their new conversation around Culture & Community that’s part of a brand new “Brave New Workplace” series. We’ll talk about fostering connection in this remote world and brainstorm ideas. Come ready for conversation with your video on and your heart open.
