In honor of our March theme—INK—and location sponsor, the Austin American-Statesman, we’re inviting you to create a Newspaper Blackout poem.

What is a Newspaper Blackout? Put simply, it’s poetry made by redacting newspaper articles with a permanent marker.

Our first CreativeMornings speaker, Austin Kleon, made this unique form of reductive poetry popular by writing a book filled with them.

We want you to become a newspaper blackout artist and you could win a book signed by Austin Kleon. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Go old school and pick up a copy of the Austin American-Statesman (or recycle any newspaper you have on hand).
2. Create your very own funny, irreverent, profound or just-plain-cool blackout piece. (For tips, click here).
3. Show it off! Tweet or Instagram your poem’s image along with hashtags #CMATX and #NewspaperBlackout.

Entries due by March 25 EOD March 27. One winner will be selected on March 27.

What’s your day job?

Creative Director of Marketing at Spredfast

What do you love in your breakfast taco?

Spinach – like the almighty Popeye. Also, like me some mushrooms, steak and Tacodeli papas. All on top of eggs and cheese. Flour tortillas, please.

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in Austin?

Wherever my bike takes me and my sketchbook.

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

The James Drake: Anatomy of Drawing and Space (Brain Trash) show at the Blanton last month. It was a collection of over 1200 drawings completed over the course of 2 years displayed as narrative of the artists’ thoughts in 10 tremendous grid compositions.  Made me want to keep on keeping on.

In the spirit of February’s theme, what do you think is necessary for a great climate?

Inspiration – whether it’s a person, a song or raw emotion –sometimes it’s easily found, sometimes I need to seek it out. I can have all the free time and resources in the world, but if I don’t have a something that motivates, my work will fall flat. When I have that inspiration, the work comes easily and goes to new places.

CMATX:  What’s your day job?

Gaby:  SXSWedu Program Coordinator at SXSW

CMATX:  What do you love in your breakfast taco?

Gaby:  Eggs and cheese are vital. With all the vegan options in Austin, you can’t assume these are included. Then bacon bacon bacon.

CMATX:  Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in Austin?

Gaby: Zilker Park! Love playing sand volleyball there, reading on top of the hill, picnicking and borrowing puppy play time.

CMATX:  What’s the one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

Gaby:  Working toward this upcoming SXSW, I’m inspired by the power of community. I’ve seen that more meaningful progress is made when people come together to collaborate and work toward a common interest, rather than work as individuals. I’m excited to watch game changers from around the world come together in Austin and help shape the future.

CMATX:  In the spirit of January’s theme, what’s an “ugly” feature of yourself you’re delightfully unashamed of?

Gaby:  Let’s go with morning breath. It’s a necessary evil we’re all familiar with, and I’m delightfully unashamed because I woke up like this. #flawless

We’re looking to make 2015 the best it can be. Please tell us about your 2014 CreativeMornings/Austin experience.

This survey will close on Friday, January 30.

Let's do some shots!

Here in ATX we love two things: creative ideas & coffee. If you’ve been to one of our recent events, you may have noticed a new feature: a 30-sec pitch by someone in the Austin creative community. Short, entertaining, and supercharged, we’ve affectionately called these pitches “espresso shots.”

We enjoy hearing about all the great projects that our CreativeMornings/Austin community is passionate about. Do you have an awesome project you’d like to pitch in 30 seconds?

Do you have…

A new project you’re passionate about?

A position you’re trying to fill?

An event you’d like to promote?

A cause that you evangelize?

A Kickstarter project in need of a kick?

A film, art installation, product or another creative baby that’s made its debut?

A joke you’d like to test? (no, really!)

Email us and let us know what you’d like to pitch. Make sure to send along any links for additional information.

Bottoms up!
