Our first Field Trip was a glimpse into the future.

We learned about Google’s self-driving cars and their “Paint the Town” art project.

You can submit an original work of art based on the the theme: “my community, my neighbors.” Five pieces will be featured on Google’s prototype vehicles as they cruise the streets of Austin.

The five artists selected will also get a ride in a self-driving car - plus a $500 gift card. (Honorable mentions will receive a $300 gift card.) All artists retain all rights to their work. Submission are due by November 1st. You can learn more here.

Thank you to Kohana Coffee for supplying their delicious cold brews. And to The Contemporary for hosting with a great set up and beautiful rooftop views.

So what are Field Trips? And how do I find out about the next one?

CreativeMornings/Austin Field Trips are bonus events designed to give our community unique, inspiring experiences outside of our monthly talks.

There is no set schedule. So the best way to find out about them is to sign up for our newsletter. Just go to CreativeMornings.com/ATX and click on the little email icon on the left, under “Stay in touch!”

Photography by George Brainard

Last month at our Empathy talk, photographer George Brainard surprised our community members with the chance to have a portrait taken in his unmistakable style. We were excited to play a part in this larger project for the global CreativeMornings family, alongside Vancouver, Mexico City, San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles, Sao Paolo, Toronto, Melbourne, and Montreal. Get a closer look at the project and all the portraits, here. Enjoy just a taste of Austin’s unique and beautiful faces!

Our September #CMugshot is Angela Alwin. You may have seen her smiling face around, as she’s faithfully attended 13 #CMATX talks. During the day, she makes it happen at Specht Harpman, handling operations, marketing and business development for the architecture firm. When she needs a break from all that doing, she heads over to UT to chill out under James Turrell’s Skyspace. A woman of intrepid tastes, she loves her breakfast tacos decked out with eggs, bacon, avocado, potatoes, queso fresco and the hottest salsa she can get her hands on.

What’s the one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

I recently saw Lisa Fischer and her band perform at One World Theatre. It’s a quirky, tiny venue and Lisa gave a transcendent performance. I was inspired by her haunting voice and her generosity in giving each member of her band so much time in the spotlight. Truly a rare and inspired performance that, every day, reminds me of the value of patience, perseverance, and gratitude. Hands down, the best show I’ve seen in Austin - if you missed it, check out “20 Feet from Stardom.” If that doesn’t inspire you, check your pulse.

Speaking from your own life experience, what product or service could benefit from the kind of empathy-driven design Jon Kolko spoke about?

Tinder. Just kidding - I actually meant financial planning services. Really. Don’t look at me that way.

Photos from September’s talk by Jon Kolko on Empathy are now up on our Flickr. Thanks to Robert Bakhshai for these awesome photos.

Also, thank you to our partners Rocksauce Studio, Cuvee Coffee, and IBM Design for bringing us this month’s event!

August’s #CMugshot is Nathaniel Muniz, who studies Finance and Photography and currently works as a restaurant host.

When not devouring chorizo and egg tacos, topped with salsa and a slice of crispy bacon, you can find him photographing by bike or on foot, as well as taking advantage of free museum days in Austin.

What have you been drawing inspiration from lately?

I am definitely taking in a lot of image and style inspiration from some ‘90s films I’m barely getting around to and from the people I see at the house shows that go on around town.

If your life were an action flick, what would the plot be?

I’d have to say it would be the classic case of mistaken identity. I’m sure it would start in some mundane way, like I walked into Room 27 instead of Room 83 because I couldn’t understand the doorman’s accent. This all leads me to being part of a pasta-worshiping cult that had been under the eye of the FBI, and trying to weave myself out of it.
