Human kindness.

A bit more than 6 years ago I moved from Europe to the USA. I never thought I could. I’ve never been to the USA before. And I’ve never lived farther than 5 miles from the rest of my family. And here I am, 6000 miles away, 6 years later - feeling at the right place, surprisingly :)

June is CRAFT A craft is the instrument in which the authenticity of your being is communicated. Your craft is like a portal to your inner world, and as an artist, it’s your duty to pull it out of the vortex. Craft is a catalyst for our identity and the soil for cultivating meaning. It behooves us to realize that who we are and become—our values, beliefs, thoughts, observations—influence what comes out of the violin, sketch, or photograph, not the other way around. This month’s global exploration of Craft was chosen by our Mumbai chapter, illustrated by Hemali Vadalia, and presented by Adobe. Join our event June 29th.

MEET AYLISHA

What’s your day job?

I’m a digital designer at Ready State, a small creative marketing agency here in SF.

What’s your favorite breakfast food?

Lately it’s been muesli with almond milk, fresh berries and a drizzle of honey.

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in the city?

Ocean Beach! But first I’d swing by the apartment to pick up my dog so he can join in on the fun.

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

While looking for an illustrator to collaborate with for a recent project, I stumbled upon Women Who Draw, an open directory of female illustrators that spotlights women of color, LBTQ+, and other minority groups. It’s a great professional resource and an absolute joy to browse through.

Share with us how you relieve anxiety?

Fresh air and exercise always helps me relax and clear my head, so I ride my bike a lot. Preferably where there’s a view and no traffic.

- I’m a Creative Recruiter connecting all the best talent in the Bay Area with the best Clients!

- Anything off the McDonald’s breakfast menu…

- Dolores Park!!!!!

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

- My wife. She’s amazing and such a hard worker, makes me want to work just as hard, even harder.

- I relieve my anxiety by hanging with friends and speaking on positive things in the world.

MEET ARIELLE

What’s your day job?
Currently, I run a small-but-mighty team of digital communicators at a nonprofit organization.

What’s your favorite breakfast food?
Cheese, lox, tomato, and red onion on the obligatory cinnamon raisin NY bagel. But the Dungeness crab eggs benedict with fresh popovers at Cliff House are a close second.

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in the city?
I tend to wander by foot on the randomly rare free afternoons I have, winding up at second-hand shops and first-rate bakeries. I especially like ReLove on Polk and Mr. Holmes on Larkin, respectively, but I don’t get to either as often as I’d like.

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?
I’m under orders to slip more color into my visual diet—which most friends would likely be surprised to hear. Despite my usual intake, I’ve still been deficient. And since I’m about to relocate to a winter-bound city, weeding out darks and neutrals—mostly from my wardrobe—has become mission critical. But I also continue to ignore the spread-out, foot-wide strips of Mexican-style floral-printed vinyl that I’m about to sew together to make a tablecloth. They’re currently all over my wooden floor. When you can easily ingest eyefuls of bold, beauteous pigment, it can easily spark new and creative ideas, just via accessibility, whether or not that project comes together right away…

What’s on your bucket list?
My father-in-law is slated to start hospice soon, and in light of an upcoming move to Cincinnati (hello CIN CMers!), this is doubly relevant. I’ve always had a lengthy bucket list, but for now, paring down my household belongings to 257 sq. ft. to fit in a U-Box is the current line item. I have two sewing machines, including an industrial one, and I’ve always kept and collected a lot of craft-worthy materials, so we’ll see how the paring down goes. Minimalism to me feels like nudity; I’m an accessories queen.

When researching or writing about courage, other traits fall into the mix: risk, vulnerability, curiosity, empathy, and action.It seems, then, that courage has nothing to do with your title or level of expertise. It’s not for the few or the gifted. It’s an act of humanity, of choosing to take an action that is risky because it demands vulnerability and curiosity.Courage has no specific form and knows no bounds. From starting a side project to the act of listening when you would rather interject, every day we are wrapped in opportunities to exercise courage.We need your courage. It’s going to be risky and will require vulnerability. A posture of empathy and curiosity will empower you. MEET BRIAN

What’s your day job?

I’m a Designer & Researcher within User Experience, and a recent* transplant from downtown Los Angeles. I just took a new role with Intuit, which I haven’t started quite yet.

What’s your favorite breakfast food?

Mimosas and/or sunlight.

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in the city?

I would drive down the Great Highway along the coast, from the Sea Cliff to the Zoo, are my favorite views of the ocean in San Francisco. During the drive I sometimes swing over to the Japanese Garden in Golden Gate Park if I need some green tea, and green space.

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

A serendipitous road trip through Southern California before I start my next role. Today I will be driving into Joshua Tree. For myself, it’s easier to think clearly when I’m in the silence of the desert, because my life tends to be so erratically loud.  

Share with us an anecdote of your first time at CM/SF.

Being new to SF I hadn’t heard of this group before. I was invited by a handsome designer at the eleventh hour, and 20 minutes later I got to spend my morning discussing art with creatives instead of guzzling coffee, and applying for jobs on my patio in Potrero Hill.

February’s theme is Curiosity

Curiosity is many things—a trait, a mindset, and a skill. To wonder about the things you don’t know and to actively fill those gaps with knowledge is to consciously enrich your life.It’s also the secret sauce for creativity. Curiosity silences ego and encourages us to ask why. By constantly asking why we keep the channel open, allowing inspiration, perspectives, and ideas to mold our work and ourselves.The more you practice being curious the more opportunities abound. Sometimes all it takes is tilting your head up and just marveling at this thing called life.This month’s global exploration of Curiosity was chosen by our Malmö chapter and illustrated by Oelwein.
