MEET BRENDA

What’s your day job?

I design interiors and I coach interior design.

What’s your favorite breakfast food?

Jook (rice porridge) with sesame sticks and lots of white pepper. Or half an avocado with lemon squeezed onto it.

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in the city?

I love the wonderland that is the Conservatory of Flowers!

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

I’m completely obsessed with paving patterns on streets and sidewalks, both intentional and random, old (like in Shanghai or London) and new (like at the High Line in New York).

Share with us an anecdote of your first time at CM/SF.

A couple of years ago, I was running late to the Creative Mornings presentation by Aminatou Sow and we actually rode up to the meeting space in the same elevator!

Imagine for a second that you have to write an email that goes out to 200,000 people. You spend all week on it, making sure there are no typos or broken links. You schedule the email.You walk into the office and the first thing you hear is, “The most important link is broken.” It’s too late, the email is registered by the servers; it’s now a beam of light carrying information through fiber glass under our oceans.Imagine that feeling of failure—sweaty palms, concerned looks by colleagues, heart rate thumping.Or better yet, what if you stopped imagining?Anxiety is a story that we tell ourselves; it’s a magnification of possible failures paired with self-talk that undermines our chances of success. Anxiety is created from within, not outside. Self-sabotage may always be part of the creative process and the sooner we can accept that the clearer we can be in the decision we need to make to move forward. MEET KEITH

What’s your day job?

Presently, I’m a multi-hat wearing Freelancer… i.e. offering creative direction for a high tech client’s collateral, CD package design for a indie musician, signage illustration for a farm to table restaurant, and multi-cam videography and editing for a SF startup’s full day conference.

What’s your favorite breakfast food?

An omelette with a side of warm scones and some robust coffee… black please. Toss in some home fries…. hold the chicken sausages for another day!

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in the city?

Too many… a relaxed stroll through the latest offerings at the Legion of Honor… follow up with some sticky goodness—Cinnamon Currant bread (with walnuts) from Acme Bakery in the Ferry Building. Eat in moderation!

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

Following the inspirational presentation by Amy M. Ho last month, I’ve begun reading “Rethinking Incarceration” by Dominique DuBois Gillard.

In the spirit of last month’s theme, Context, share with us an anecdote of your first time at CM/SF.

Enjoyed the chilled morning walk from Embarcadero BART to IDEO for Shoshana Berger’s presentation… got there early and waited about 15 min for the doors to open… brrrr. I’m spoiled attending OaktownCM gatherings where I can usually park a short block away!

I work in Sales at a small startup and am transitioning into Product.

Salumeria in the Mission. Get the granola. Just trust me.

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

My girlfriend. She believes in me more than I believe in myself. This makes me believe I can do it.

Death has inspired humanity since time immemorial, influencing ideologies and storytelling to our understanding of life and how we live it. To our ancient ancestors, the fear of death was a palpable and daily motivator. Although our world is infinitely safer than it was centuries ago, we are still driven by the fear of death and we expertly attribute it to even the smallest events: traffic, deadlines, a mistake, public speaking, your boss’s name on your caller ID on a Saturday. What we have done well as a species is leverage the fear of death to inspire achievements that seemed impossible, to create work that needed to be made, and to discover insights that help us live well. This month’s global exploration of Death was chosen by our Miami chapter and illustrated by 2016 Adobe Creative Resident Syd Weiler. Meet Melody

What’s your day job?

I am a Product Designer at Instabeat, a company that makes wearables for swimmers to train like a champion. I talk to swimmers to understand their needs and problems, discuss the scope with stakeholders based on our company’s resources and priorities. Then, with all those criteria in mind, I proceed to design a mobile app for swimmers. (Am I editing my Linkedin Profile?) We are always looking for swimmers to test our product, please contact me if you are interested in being a tester :) !

What’s your favorite breakfast food?

Tough question. I grew up in Hong Kong where I was used to eating all kinds of different food for breakfast everyday. I really don’t have a favorite that I always fall back on. What I eat for breakfast really depends on what I feel like when I wake up, what’s in the fridge and how much time I have.

If I feel like eating sweet and have enough time, I may leave home 20 mins earlier to stop at a Chinese bakery to get warm pineapple custard bun straight out from the oven. If I don’t have enough time, I may make toasts with half-inch-thick of Nutella spread on top. If I feel like eating savory, I may scramble some eggs with herbs or I may eat a croissant. My list of breakfast food can go on and on without repeating. However, I definitely don’t like to eat cereals with milk or energy bars for breakfast.

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in SF?

SFMOMA, the space in the new SFMOMA gives me such calming effect that nowhere else in SF matches. I can look at Gerhard Richter or Agnes Martin’s works all day.

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

The 1985 movie ‘Brazil’ I watched at the Roxie Theater on Christmas Day. Besides loving all the surrealist plots, settings and costumes in the movie, I was particularly inspired by the idea of it being “unapologetically ridiculous and intentional” all at the same time. It feels like a fresh air for me and makes me more comfortable being absolutely ridiculous.

Meet Michael

What’s your day job?

By day, I’m a UX designer at Airbnb and work on our design language system. At night, I refresh Beyoncé’s instagram and await the release of visual albums and/or concert tickets. #stayready

What’s your favorite breakfast food?

I hear bottomless mimosas are popular. I prefer bottomless potatoes. In any form factor. Fried extra crispy. Blessed.

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in SF?

The Potrero Hill Community Garden (San Bruno Ave & 20th St) has panoramic views of San Francisco and a wild abundance of plants. The other day, I discovered a chicken coop tucked away in the garden and assume it’s legal. The chickens were indeed alive when I snapchatted them and applied the appropriate stickers.

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

There’s an exquisite nature documentary narrated by Meryl Streep called Wings Of Life. In the film, she pretends she’s a flower and says things like “I’m going to tell you, on behalf of all flowers, about life from our point of view. You think we’re just fragile wisps of beauty, unaware that beauty is our strategy.” This movie has inspired me to be Meryl Streep.

In the spirit of the Fantasy theme, if you had one wish what would be it?

What’s my fantasy? Getting 9 hours of solid sleep!—the kind of sleep babies go around flaunting in public, unconscious of their surroundings, swaddled in warm sheepskins. Indeed, mine is a 2-part fantasy of deep sleep and adult-sized strollers available to the public on demand.

Meet Asis

What’s your day job?

I design mobile user experiences for all the app undertakings at Healthline media. I work with an amazing team of product manager, developers, editorial designers and illustrators. I feel, my work is like trying to compose a symphony on the business side and delivering a performance for the users. There are tensions, lot of going back and forth, clutter but eventually it leads to clarity and you have a design. This is then consumed by the users like a piece of music which is delightful and fulfilling.

What’s your favorite breakfast food?

My favorite breakfast is a sinful omelette made with mushrooms and chorizo cooked in butter. The Scandinavian low carb high fat diet has been working wonderfully.

Where’s a place you’d stop on a free afternoon in SF?

Many many places, to an extent that’s the beauty of SF. If I have to pick one then it has to be at SFMOMA to brood over sitting across the “Red Curves” piece by Ellsworth Kelly.

What’s one thing you’ve been inspired by lately?

Right now, in this week and the last I’m inspired by an entrepreneur in India, Shashank MD. He’s an underdog who hasn’t graduated from prominent school, yet by sheer perseverance is single handedly changing the Indian healthcare system.

Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t be able to guess.

That I’m an introvert. This has always surprised people.

Crows. They are really smart animals. Crows are awesome.
