May 1st 2015 roboticist Justin Hart steps up to the stage at Creative Mornings Vancouver to share his story on the monthly theme of Robots. He designs robots to understand how humans think and communicate with each other and presents this as a day-to-day creative test. Coming out of his PhD dissertation at Yale, 2014 he is with us sharing the latest in robotics engineering for human development. He notes, “I look for the gaps in our understanding…I look to see how I can fill in these gaps.” He thinks a few steps ahead - “When I’m actually working on a project, I’ll have an idea for a related project, and then put it onto the back burner. By the time we’re celebrating a job well done, I’m thinking, “Okay, so which back burner idea do I get to pursue now?”

Hart is a postdoctoral fellow in the Collaborative Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CARIS) Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of British Columbia. His PhD dissertation in Robot Self-Modeling is based in the processes by which children learn about their sensory and physical capabilities, one of the earliest forms of self-awareness developed during infancy.

Hart states ”…it’s our job is to learn things for everyone’s benefit. The ability of our work to benefit others hinges on our ability to communicate it to others.
