You can just play with whatever you've got, wherever you are.
When you're doing something that excites you, and you're interested in 100%, people can sense that.
When you're playing, your work is really authentic.
To be able to play successfully,... you need some rules like any kind of game.
Play is pretty powerful stuff.
It’s important to have a set time and place to be able to play in and get in to that mental space where you can have fun.
Be professional, not a professional.
When you are doing something that excites you and you are interested in 100%, that people can kind of sense that on some subconscious level and kind of gets them excited as well and they want to be involved.
When you are playing, your work is really authentic and it’s about you and what you’re interested in.
If you can take lanes of traffic out of midtown New York, you can take them out anywhere.
I think recognizing yourself is critical for 21st century designers. 21st century design is orchestration, it's not siloed, it's us coming together.
That's the entrepreneur way: continue trying things, keep pushing forward, and don't be hesitant to pivot or adjust if something isn't working out.
Because if we give up the right to make, what do we do?
The jobs of dreams is to scare the hell out of you!
My vision is; what have I seen that others haven’t?
When you’re trying your hardest and taking all your risks, you're on your toes ‘cause at any point you can fail, and so everyday is the battle!
Show your talent on the project that’s in front of you now, because that’s the one that matters most.
Your restrictions will help you if you start to think about them in a positive way.
If we give up the right to make, what do we do?
It is not the job of dreams to be logical or sensible. The job of dreams is to scare the hell out of you.
I believe in the underdog, I believe in the guy that doesn’t think he has much talent, so carries on working.
So, unless you’re interested in something, just don’t do it, rule number one!
Businesses will test you to you nth level.
I ask myself, am I interested in this shit?
When your world is flipped upside-down you start to get pretty creative
The moment I got fired reignited my imagination out of necessity
Everything will be fine.
Do it anyway.
Be irrational, ridiculous and nonsensical.
Win, even when no one gives you a chance.
See opportunity where others see obstacles.
Crossovers are the doorways to great change.
Crossovers give us permission to let go and get complete; to let a part of ourselves die so that this new part of us can be reborn, more expansive and complete than before.
When we are vulnerable, we actually get connected to what makes us feel most awake and alive. That's sort of the unexpected thing. It allows us to really connect to what matters most, like your values, where you feel like your gifts are being underutilized, and perhaps most importantly, it allows us to feel our fear, and experience it without getting hijacked by it.
We often try and avoid frustration, but frustration is often our biggest catalyst to creating change for us.
It’s not all smooth sailing being an autodidact.
Crossover is going to be the context within which we live.
In order to really thrive and do well within in this context of change… we’ve got to be able to navigate an uncertain path.
Typography is very subliminal. When we’re reading, we read the content; and it’s actually difficult to see the typography itself, because you focus so much on the content.
The thing that started to set us apart as a magazine was that we started to produce merchandise.
We took photo bloggers off the internet and into the gallery. That rarely ever happened at that time.
Once I started Spacing I actually started to hit my stride as someone who was designing and being an artist and being creative with the city.
We created Spacing because there was no publication in the city dealing with public space issues.
I was one of the few people that knew how to use a Mac and I was also one of the few people who actually knew anything about Quark Express. Who here is a Quark Express Expert?
I found myself having to look for making a living off of freelance work... maybe I should be clear they actually fired me.
By coming this morning you've told me that you're thoughtful, creative, eager, building ideas of your own, so I would suggest that as you pursue your personal and professional aspirations, that you think not just about what will be good for you, but what will be good for the larger community - how we will come together for the common good.
Entrepreneurial Crossover: That's when an idea and energy meet resource.
Scuzați româna mea de dimineață
My talk was about absolutely nothing to do with advertising
Imagine you've got a mouth under your armpit and just yaaaawn your armpit!
When you leave a room, make sure no one hates you.
We often try to avoid frustration but frustration is actually our biggest catalyst to creating change for us
It's working for likes, it doesn't pay the bills, but it get's a lot of likes.
If there is something that I'm interested in but I'm really scared to do it, that's the best indicator that I will learn something from it.
It's one thing to know how to play your hand. It's another thing to know what the player might have. But the best skill to have is to know what the player is thinking about you.
'People' is the one constant.
You gotta create relationships. It's gonna help your career, your soul, it's gonna help you in everything in life.
Instead of painting graffiti that emulated signs, I started painting signs that emulated graffiti.
Treat everything like it's your first project.
The world has probably always been in perpetual crisis—now it has come to a breaking point
Eclecticism is a natural cross-breading between people. That is what crossover is.
Eclecticism is what we're talking about at Crossover. It's the mixing of different styles because people communicate with one another.
We like to put things into boxes. These boxes are good for selling things, but they are not necessarily good for the way the human mind thinks or works.
I cannot draw, I cannot paint or sculpt or any other kind of art … I can just made images with food.
